Writing as a Formative Practice:
A Conversation with Lily Abadal
12.00–1.30pm | Friday, November 13
Elm Library, 31 Whitney Avenue
Since ChatGPT was released to the public in 2022, universities have been scrambling to figure out the place of writing in the university. What is the value of the traditional essay? Is it an exercise essential to the life of the mind, or something we can simply do away with amid mounting concerns about academic integrity? Drawing on Montaigne and Aristotle, we will consider why writing is a formative exercise worth protecting. Even more importantly, we will ask: how might we protect the formative work of writing in a culture of convenience?
Lily Abadal teaches in the Honors College of the University of South Florida.
This event is open to all members of the Yale community. Lunch will be served.

I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means.
