Tuesday Essay: "On Being the Right Size"

  • Elm Institute Library (map)

Elm’s Tuesday luncheon series features discussions of short but thought-provoking essays on a variety of topics.

A leading figure in the development of neo-Darwinian theory, J.B.S. Haldane was also a prominent public intellectual who wrote widely on scientific and political topics. In one of his most celebrated popular essays, Haldane explains why different forms of organism are only possible at particular scales, and suggests that something similar is true of human institutions in ways that have far reaching political implications.
