In “Politics and the English Language” George Orwell argues that bad writing is not simply an aesthetic problem, but a political one. Cliché-ridden prose is a sign of thoughtlessness, and thoughtlessness is one of the conditions that allows for a degraded and corrupt politics. Three quarters of a century after its original publication, Orwell’s essay remains a timely reminder about the close connection between language and thought, and why good writing matters.
