Some argue that higher education operates largely as a job credentialing system, a kind of sorting hat for the labor market. To what extent does this perspective guide college student decisions about programs of study and extracurricular activities? How can they escape the constraints of labor market signaling and fashion an education that yields something more than a necessary, but often rather empty credential?
