In his forthcoming book, The Third Sword: On the Political Role of Prophets, philosopher James Murphy examines the distinctive contribution of prophetic figures who through their words and deeds challenge political institutions from a perspective that transcends ordinary politics, considering examples from the Hebrew prophets and Socrates through to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

James Murphy is Professor of Government, Dartmouth College.
