In the 1980s the literary critic E.D. Hirsch coined the term “cultural literacy” to describe the cultural knowledge - familiarity with works of art and literature, stories and sayings - that is required for full participation in a nation’s public discourse. In a time of cultural overload, when it is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of cultural products available to us, can we still make sense of the idea of cultural literacy? As habits of cultural consumption become more fragmented, how should we decide what we need to know?
