This half-day seminar will explore the ways in which moral and intellectual virtues are cultivated and challenged in the practice of medicine, focusing especially on the place of practical wisdom in clinical judgment and the virtue of moral integrity in the face of distress. We will also examine the important role of narratives in medicine and the way in which narrative reflections can reveal the tensions that often exist between the explicit and implicit ethical values promoted in medical education.
