Tuesday Essay: "Trying Out One's New Sword"

  • Elm Institute Library (map)

Elm’s Tuesday luncheon series features discussions of short but thought-provoking essays on a variety of topics.

Do respect and tolerance preclude us from passing moral judgments about cultures other than our own? In “Trying Out One’s New Sword” Mary Midgley argues that despite the popularity of this view it is ultimately unsustainable. While we should not be hasty in passing judgments across cultural boundaries, any view that implies that all such judgments are necessarily illegitimate will ultimately require us to abandon moral judgment altogether.
