In “Eating Our Friends” the English philosopher Roger Scruton defends an unusual and distinctive position on the ethics of meat-eating. While denying that eating meat is always wrong, Scruton argues that its justification depends not only on the way that the animals are treated but also on the way that we eat. A culture that has lost touch with the moral and spiritual significance of eating will therefore be a culture in which the eating of meat is morally indefensible.
