In “In Praise of Idleness” Bertrand Russell argues that the common attitude that treats hard work as virtuous while regarding leisure with suspicion is badly mistaken. It is not a sign of laziness to want more leisure and advances in industrial production have created the conditions under which it could abundant leisure could be available to all and not just a privileged “leisure class.” Equipping people to use leisure well should be seen a fundamental task of civilization.
