The philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s influential After Virtue begins with an examination of the kind of interminable moral debates that feature prominently in contemporary culture, a culture which he describes as ‘emotivist’. MacIntyre’s critique of emotivist culture has often been misunderstood, even by his admirers, as a variation on the familiar complaint that our culture is beset by moral relativism. But this interpretation underestimates both the originality and the diagnostic power of MacIntyre’s social critique.
