Elizabeth Anscombe’s classic essay “Modern Moral Philosophy” is often credited with laying the foundations for the rise of virtue ethics in the last decades of the twentieth century. To see Anscombe’s essay as a precursor to virtue theory risks obscuring the most radical aspects of her ethical thought.
