Not to be confused with apathy or indifference, disinterest is the attitude we take whenever we act “for the sake of” a given activity, thinking neither of our particular aims nor of the activity’s consequences. What is the proper role of disinterest in the life of a university? How can disinterest be defended while acknowledging the legitimacy of the various practical and political purposes universities are expected to serve?
