Elm’s Tuesday luncheon series features discussions of short but thought-provoking essays on a variety of topics.

In “Shop Class as Soulcraft” Matthew Crawford argues that the categories that we use to talk about work obscure more than they reveal. In particular, we have been taught to underestimate both the psychological satisfaction and economic security that can be found in the trades. The work of electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and automotive mechanics involves a combination of manual and cognitive skills that once mastered is highly fulfilling, and resistant to the kind of routinization found in both white collar and blue collar work.
